Middle Back Seat Is The Safest In A Car

Middle Back Seat Is The Safest In A Car
In a full car, some poor soul is relegated to the middle of the back seat, the least desirable, most uncomfortable, most "un-cool" spot in the vehicle.

It also happens to be the safest.

University at Buffalo scientists studied all auto crashes involving a fatality in the U.S. between 2000 and 2003 where someone occupied the rear middle-seat.

They found that occupants of the back seat are 59 percent to 86 percent safer than passengers in the front seat and that, in the back seat, the person in the middle is 25 percent safer than other back-seat passengers.

"After controlling for factors such as restraint use, vehicle type, vehicle weight, occupant age, weather and light conditions, air-bag deployment, drug results and fatalities per crash, the rear middle seat is still 16 percent safer than any other seat in the vehicle," said Dietrich Jehle, M.D., UB associate professor of emergency medicine and lead author on the study.

Results of the study were presented at the May meeting of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine in San Francisco, Calif.

Jehle and his colleagues at the Center for Transportation Injury Research (CenTIR), conducted a retrospective cohort study of fatal crashes in which there were rear-seat occupants and at least one fatality in the vehicle. CenTIR is headquartered in the Erie County Medical Center and is affiliated with the Calspan UB Research Center (CUBRC).........

Swarovski Crystals Covered Cars

Swarovski Crystals Covered Cars
Having a Mini encrusted with over 35,000 Swarovski crystals on the road is insane. Burkitt & Burkitt has put together one-sixth scale models of various crystal-covered cars each individually placed by hand.

The stunning showpiece will be a unique promotional tool to attract both media and public interest at shows and exhibitions around the world. The jewelry company is currently looking for sponsors and investors to help finance a vehicle in a theme of their choice. I think you have to spend millions of dollars to get it done. Anyone interested?.........

Couple's Car Turns Heads At Top Shows

Couple's Car Turns Heads At Top Shows
The sleek, teardrop-shaped car is eye-popping in its perfection - the closer you examine it, the more perfect it becomes.

And Rich and Paige Udell of Swan Lake have ridden this street rod to fame over the last two years, winning the most prestigious hot-rodding awards in North America. The Udells and "The Instigator" have been featured in hot rodding magazines around the world, along with dozens of television programs.

The highly modified 1934 Chevrolet Sedan, scarlet and black, has appeared in advertisements, on billboards and posters and promotions and even on sporting-event tickets across the country.

"It is a piece of hot-rodding history now," says Rich Udell. "It has had more ink, more television and more exposure than any car in the last 20 years".

The ride culminated last month in Cincinnati, Ohio, where The Instigator was picked as the overall international champion at the International Show Car Association's annual competition.

That was the pinnacle for the Udells, who have been gradually improving on a series of hot rods since the early part of 1990s.

"This is the fourth or fifth car that we've had," Rich says. "Each one got a little better and a little better, until we got to this one".

For Rich, it was the culmination of a lifetime interest.........

Big Plans In Making For Itasca Auto Maker

Big Plans In Making For Itasca Auto Maker
It's been a big year for Midas Inc.

In the past six months, the Itasca-based automotive supplier has made its president chairman, launched a new television ad campaign, seen its profits rise 46 percent, bought back $4 million of its shares and shed its exhaust distribution business.

But with half a year to go before Dec. 31, the former operator of muffler shops may want to hold off on the champagne.

For Midas, which has 1,788 shops in the United States and Canada and 2,610 worldwide, 2006 also has packed some punches, including a 7 percent dip in sales in the first quarter, its shares trading on the lower end of its 52-week high, and less-than-expected comparable-store sales.

But equipped with a sweeping growth strategy that includes a goal of improving store sales by 40 percent by 2010, restarting store expansion in North America, and repurchasing $50 million in stock, the company remains optimistic about the future, even as clouds gather over the automotive service industry.

Traffic in shops has been "less than we hoped for," said spokesman Bob Troyer. But he added, "we're focused on executing all initiatives to keep sales at levels they should be".

In the first quarter ended April 1, the company saw growth of just 1.3 percent, with similar preliminary results for May. Midas attributed the softness in retail sales growth to consumer reaction to higher gas prices.........

MRI For Fuel Cells

MRI For Fuel Cells
As gasoline prices top $3 a gallon in major cities, the drive toward increasing energy efficiency and reducing air pollution has accelerated, and the development of fuel cells has become a major focus worldwide.

Knowing how fuel cells work is key to improving their performance and reducing the cost of their production. Now a research team led by Scott A. Barnett, professor of materials science and engineering at Northwestern University, has produced the first three-dimensional images of the interior of a fuel cell -- providing a new tool for the study and development of fuel cells.

The researchers' three-dimensional reconstruction of a solid oxide fuel cell anode was reported in a paper published this month by the journal Nature Materials. (A solid oxide fuel cell efficiently converts fuels such as hydrogen and natural gas directly into electricity; Barnett's group also recently reported a similar fuel cell that works with a liquid transportation fuel -- iso-octane, a high-purity compound similar to gasoline.)

"Much like magnetic resonance imaging produces a view inside the human body, we now can look inside fuel cells," said Barnett. "The dual-beam focused-ion-beam microscope used in the study provides much higher resolution than an MRI, showing nanometer-scale features. These pictures will help us and other scientists to unravel how fuel cells work so they can eventually be improved and made to work longer without failing.".........

2007 Saturn Sky

2007 Saturn Sky
Hooray for another American Miata beater! This is the 2007 Saturn Sky, which is essentially the Saturn version of the new Pontiac Solstice. Like the Solstice, the new Sky will be priced at under $25,000, and will have a 2.4 liter, 170hp four cylinder engine.

I have to say I really like the styling of the Saturn Sky, far more than the Solstice. The cutesy rounded nose of the Solstice has been replaced with a much more aggressive looking piece, with a nice big air dam. Kind of looks like a tiny Ferrari from the back. That's just me.

Personally I'd still take the Miata for its handling, but it should be fun to see if GM can make a dent in the cheap, fun roadster market.........

Astin Martin Rapide

Astin Martin Rapide
This is just a beautiful car! Set for an actual launch date in 2007 (who knows when in 2007). The car is the same size a Mercedez Benz S-Class and a Maserati Quattroporte and the Porsche Panamera, (and most probably the same price). Nothing has been confirmed, but it is very possible that the car will be available to the rich and wealthy here in Australia.

The Rapide's V12 engine pumps out a massive 480 horsepower getting the car to 100 in less than 5 seconds and all the way up to almost 300km/hour!........

Peugeot debuts its 907 high-powered coupe

Peugeot debuts its 907 high-powered coupe
When I stop and think about some of those European brands that we never get to enjoy here in North America -- like Citroen and Renault -- I get conflicted. On the one hand, I can envision the fuel-sipping, slow-as-mud city dwellers doing their daily rounds. Conversely, images of off-road rally driving come to mind, with wild jumps and all-wheel-drive. The new 907 coupe concept fits neither of these stereotypes.

"Peugeot's swoopy coupe concept", as Top Gear put it, bears a closer resemblance to some of the highest powered roadsters and coupes on the market, getting right in line with the likes of AMG'd out Mercedes and the like. The 6.0-litre V12 found in the Peugeot 907 is capable of developing 500 horsepower. That extra juice will come in handy when it makes its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK, where it will be participating in the Supercar hillclimb Run.........

Hot Wheels For Wheelchair Users

Hot Wheels For Wheelchair Users
Style has rarely been a priority in industrial design for the disabled - until now that is. Designed in Hungary, the Kenguru is a car specially designed for wheelchair users. The car's interior space has no front seat - just a space built to house the driver's own wheelchair so all he/she has to do is simply roll in through the extra large car doors and into position.

The wheelchair locks into place, within easy reach of the car's controls which are centred around a joystick. It's light years away from the current options for disabled drivers, which involve having to hoist themselves into the driver's seat of standard cars.
