Road Test: Bugatti Veyron

Road Test: Bugatti Veyron
Bugatti's Veyron is claimed to be the world's most expensive and powerful production car ever.

At $1.3 million, it boasts a 8.0L quad-turbo W16 engine that produces 1000+hp and 927 ft. lb torque - rocketing the vehicle from 0-60 mph in just 2.4 seconds. Top Gear takes this beast out for a test run. Watch after the jump.

After what seems like years of teasing us with prototypes, mock sketches and the odd mention of a 1001 brake horsepower engine, the Bugatti Veyron is finally finished and will be sold to European markets late in 2006, and America and Asia Pacific territories after that.........

The Plaid 2007 Mercedes S-Class

The Plaid 2007 Mercedes S-Class
What better way to start the morning than with a plaid Mercedes S-Class? Thanks to an alert reader over at Jalopnik, that's exactly what we're doing.

The S-Class, which bears a striking resemblance to the lining of a sleeping bag I owned when I was five, was photographed at MBUSA's parking lot.

Other than that, I think the photo speaks for itself.

For more info, head over to Jalopnik for the full article.

[Update: An informed reader sent us a tip notifying us the S-Class in question is scheduled to appear at an unnamed fashion show. Eventhough I doubt any of you are considering transforming your S-Class into a rolling Burberry advertisement, we'll keep you posted if we hear anything new.]........

Fuel Cells Savings

Fuel Cells Savings
We've gone on the record saying fuel cells are at least 20 years away. But when will that make a big difference in our use of gasoline? A long, long time:

"The potential for hydrogen fuel cells having an impact that you'd notice is a long way away," says John Heywood, professor of mechanical engineering at MIT. The estimates assume that competitive fuel cell vehicles will be available within 15 years, an achievement that will require improvements, for example, in hydrogen storage and production and fuel-cell costs. But even if and when fuel-cell vehicles come with the price and performance that consumers want, it will still take decades more before such new vehicles work their way into widespread use.

MIT is talking 60 years in regards to gasoline usage and nasty emissions before hydrogen makes a big enough difference for any of us to benefit from. So what to do?

Use less of the stuff. But MIT knows that's not the American way:

Heywood admits these ideas might not be rapidly adopted: "It's not American to conserve. We seem to have drifted into that attitude. Our culture doesn't bring us up to think about conserving. It brings us up to think about consuming".

We are totally diggin' the new subcompacts from the big 3 of Japan and are honestly hoping our big 2.5 from home announce competitors to those vehicles rather than announcing more of the same.........

Opel, Opel, Everywhere

Opel, Opel, Everywhere
AutoWeek reports: Opels Coming? Well, duh. Saturn's new cars (Sky and Aura) are Opels.

And they are decent. Well, they look decent, anyway. Now Saturn just needs to drive the leftover Ions into the drink and start importing the Mazda3-looking Opel Astra and we'll be talking money. That's a snap of the Mazda3 because we like the Mazda3.........

What's The Answer To High Gas Prices?

What's The Answer To High Gas Prices?
All the car news lately has left us pretty confused. Large SUV sales are up, large luxury SUVs are down, small car sales are up, yet so are large luxury cars. What the. ? Eh, we don't know either. The Detroit News reports: Weary buyers look for fuel-sipping cars. Are people really willing to "sacrafice" big-ass SUVs for more fuel economy? If gas prices drop back down ($2/gallon-ish), will people, once again, head back to the SUV?.

Think this will affect GM now that its new SUVs are in full production? Speaking of gas: Jalopnik writes: George Bush Oil Fighter. Meanwhile, Leftlane News reports: Bush orders probe into gas prices. Oh, right. The president is going to look into it. He might as well try to help The Juice find Nicole's killer.........
