What's The Answer To High Gas Prices?
All the car news lately has left us pretty confused. Large SUV sales are up, large luxury SUVs are down, small car sales are up, yet so are large luxury cars. What the. ? Eh, we don't know either. The Detroit News reports: Weary buyers look for fuel-sipping cars. Are people really willing to "sacrafice" big-ass SUVs for more fuel economy? If gas prices drop back down ($2/gallon-ish), will people, once again, head back to the SUV?.
Think this will affect GM now that its new SUVs are in full production? Speaking of gas: Jalopnik writes: George Bush Oil Fighter. Meanwhile, Leftlane News reports: Bush orders probe into gas prices. Oh, right. The president is going to look into it. He might as well try to help The Juice find Nicole's killer.........

The Congos And Friends
One-rhythm albums have been a fixture of reggae since the mid-seventies. Commonly they compile previously released singles by different artists who re-used the same rhythm track; however, this two-disc set compiles brand new versions of a Lee Perry rhythm from 1977, The Congos' "Fisherman".
Blood and Fire enlisted Basic Channel/Burial Mix's Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald to provide edits, mixdown, and mastering (no doubt inspired by last year's excellent Rhythm & Sound series See Mi Yah). The set begins with an edit of the original "Fisherman" track. Oddly enough, this version removes the fun bass vocals of Watty "King" Burnett, and tape drop-outs seem even more pronounced than on the reissued Heart of the Congos LP. The first disc continues with contributions from the most senior artists. Big Youth deejays, grooving to the rhythm, asking, "Did ye hear what The Congos say?" He toasts about fishing in the literal sense, saying "The hungry must be fed," his voice leaping into an upper register. Horace Andy's "Love Love Love" is especially moving, beginning with the phrase, "Live in love and unity!" He continues, "All violence must come to an end," his voice sweet as ever.........

TV Viewing During Lunch
In a recent Penn State laboratory study, preschool children who usually eat meals at home while watching TV ate one-third more lunch when they were shown a cartoon video during lunchtime versus when they ate lunch without TV.
The children who did not eat in front of the TV at home and for whom TV viewing during meals and snack was novel, actually ate significantly less on the days the lunchtime cartoon was shown compared to the days on which there was no video.
Dr. Lori Francis, assistant professor of biobehavioral health and first author of the recently published paper on the study, "The study shows that TV viewing can either increase or decrease preschool children's food intakes and suggests that when children consistently view TV during meals, TV viewing may distract children from normal fullness cues which can lead to overeating in children as it may in adults".
In their paper, the researchers write, "To promote self-regulation of energy intake in young children, parents and caregivers should be advised against providing opportunities for children to eat during TV viewing".
The results of the study are detailed in, "Does Eating During Television Viewing Affect Preschool Children's Intake?," published in the recent issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. The authors are Francis and Dr. Leann L. Birch, distinguished professor of human development and family studies, at Penn State.........

New Crash Tests Of Midsize Cars
Crashworthiness evaluations for seven new or redesigned midsize car models reflect performance in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's front, side, and rear impact tests. The models include three moderately priced cars - Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, and Pontiac G6. The other four models are luxury/near luxury cars - Acura TSX, BMW 3 series, Infiniti G35, and Lexus IS.
The best overall performers are the BMW 3 series and Lexus IS, which earned the silver TOP SAFETY PICK designation for good performance in the Institute's front and side crash tests plus acceptable ratings for their seat/head restraint designs in rear tests. The Ford Fusion, tested without its optional side airbags, earned the lowest overall ratings. It's the only car in this group that didn't earn a good rating in the frontal test. It earned a poor rating in the side test and a marginal rating for rear crash protection.
"Nearly every car now earns good ratings in our frontal test," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "The Fusion is acceptable, which isn't a bad result, but it's not competitive with other cars in its class. Based on this car's side and rear evaluations along with its acceptable frontal rating, the Fusion is the lowest rated moderately priced midsize car we've evaluated".........

Beatles Catalog Going Online
The Beatles spearheaded a cultural revolution, but when it comes to the the Internet one, they've more or less remained spectators. Until now. The Fabs catalog will finally be made available online, as per Neil Aspinall, former Beatles road manager and managing director of Apple Corps, which is currently awaiting decision in a trademark lawsuit with Apple Computer.
Aspinall made known during the trial last week that the online sale will coincide with the release of newly remastered editions of the Beatles' albums (also long overdue). Still, there is no word on which Internet music service will offer the music or exactly when.

Getting Promoted In Your Current Job
If you're interested in advancing in your career, the best argument for staying with one company for a while is potential promotion opportunities. If you have a good relationship with your boss, they probably know your strengths better than you could explain to someone in the course of an interview or in a 2-page resume. The trick is motivating your boss to see you as someone who should move up to the next level.
Use the resources you have Whether or not you've been networking all along, you should definitely start to do it.
The "elevator pitch" isn't just for people looking for a job outside their current company - you should also have an elevator pitch developed about where you're looking to go in your career with your present employer. If you're not sure what an elevator pitch is, visit the articles section on our site and check out the one on "Developing a Job Search Elevator Pitch."
Also, use current projects as a way to "advertise" your strengths to others in the company. By doing a great job on projects and exceeding expectations, you'll be generating some positive publicity for yourself.
Get prepared Find out who's picking the candidate for the promotion and what skills they're seeking for the job. Next, make sure you have the top four or five skills or the ability to produce them. Start checking out your marketing portfolio, resume, or anything else you can use. Organize your materials and make sure they clearly reflect the skills needed. Use examples to show the things you've already done in the company that have helped them succeed (or even exceed) their goals.........

Who Is Responsible for Adware?
As adware continues to annoy computer users, efforts to crack down on ad-serving software have begun to focus on the advertisers behind some of the pop-ups.
New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, whose office has sued two major adware vendors, has threatened to come after advertisers. An affidavit filed last week with Mr. Spitzer's lawsuit against Internet marketer Direct Revenue named some large companies that continue to advertise through adware. (Direct Revenue, for its part, has said the case is "baseless" and focused on the company's past practices.) FTC Commissioner Jonathan Leibowitz recently proposed "shaming" companies that advertise through adware by publishing their names.
But what responsibility do advertisers have when it comes to adware? The Wall Street Journal Online asked Ari Schwartz, deputy director of the Center for Democracy and Technology, and Eric Goldman, a law professor at Marquette University, to discuss the ethical issues and legal risks. Their exchange, carried out over email, is below.........
