    Computer Cases

There are several names for computer cases. It may also be called as computer chassis, computer box or computer housing. This is the outer covering of the computer that encloses the main parts of the computer. Many computer cases are made from aluminum, but cases made from aluminum, plastic and other materials are also available in the market. Sometimes the cases may be made from wood or Perspex.

Depending upon the need for the components inside, the computer cases may come in many different sizes or form factors. ATX is currently the most popular form of computer case.

In the recent years small form factor cases are becoming more and more popular. Many companies are making Mini-ITX computer, which is the most common motherboard, designed for these cases. Apple Computer recently announced its Mac Mini computer, which is around the size of a CD-ROM drive.

A computer case with ATX motherboard and power supply, can be designed is several multitudes of ways. Cases may be in the form of towers, or mid size towers, desktops or may be in any shape depending on the imagination of the case makers. Computer cases have a way to connect a power supply unit, and may contain several several expansion slots and expansion bays, wires for powering up a computer and some with built in I/O ports that must be connected to a motherboard. Tower cases are taller and typically have more room while desktop cases are more compact and are more popular in business environments.

Motherboard is the most important part of the computer and it is usually screwed to the bottom of the case, its I/O ports being exposed on the side of the case. The place for the power supply is usually placed at the top of the case.

Classic designs of computers were beige in color and were rectangular in shape. Now they have evolved in style in recent years. Introduction of iMac in 1998 brought a revolution in the computer case models.

Look at this design of computer case. shiny Aluminum Computer Case
It took a couple of years for him to make this sleek looking shiny aluminum computer case. It probably would have taken less time since he was busy doing several other things the same time. This case is made of 12 cast sections and some sheet (all aluminum) TIG welded and fit together. There is quite a bit of painstaking fitting involved in getting all the hinges right and getting all the doors to have nice fits. Then he put in several days polishing the whole thing. The interior of the drive bays is paneled with curly maple, and he plans to do some upholstering on the insides of the doors to complete the feeling of luxury. What a wonderful looking computer case. Its worth a look.
